Hiring A Camera Crew
Lights Lights, Camera, Action! Hire the Perfect Camera Crew for Your Video Project
How do you get a film crew?
So, you've got a brilliant video idea swirling around your head, be it a new marketing launch, a high-octane commercial, or a lifesaving safety training film. But transforming that vision into reality requires more than just a script and a smartphone.
That's where the magic of a skilled camera crew comes in. They're the wizards behind the lens, the puppeteers of lighting and sound, the artists who helps your film gain focus.
Often you need someone with specialize gear and experience to fulfil your vision. Other times, you just need someone in Chicago to deliver it because you're not located locally and the budget or time does not allow you to shoot it your self. You need to hire a film crew your producers can ensure will get the interviews recorded exactly as asked.
But with a sea of talented video crews, navigating the whole film crew hiring process can feel like a task. Fear not, filmmaker! This blog post is your treasure map, guiding you through the key steps to finding the perfect camera and film crew for your assignment.
How do you find the best crew for you?
Step 1: Define Your Needs and Budget
Before diving headfirst into camera, film crew and production company portfolios, take a moment for introspection. What type of video are you creating? Is it a fast-paced action sequence for a marketing video, a contemplative interview or just some b-roll pickup shots? Knowing your genre will help narrow down the search for film crews with relevant experience.
Budgeting is equally crucial. Be honest about your budget, timeline and limitations and communicate them clearly upfront. Remember, a good film crew will work within your constraints and suggest creative solutions to maximize your resources.
Step 2: Research and Scout
Now comes the fun part: exploring the vast talent pool! We're assuming you got to this blog post through a web search. Don't just trust bold claims- dig deep into work samples, paying close attention to the visual style, lighting choices, sound and storytelling techniques. Does the production company produce content similar to what you envision your footage to look like?

Word-of-mouth recommendations can also be invaluable. Reach out to colleagues, friends, your producer, and industry professionals for their trusted crew referrals. Remember, personal endorsements speak volumes about a crew in terms of reliability and quality of work.
Acclaim Media has been shooting video and producing location content since 1998. Odds are someone you know has already used us.
A Word Of Caution - Don’t Be Fooled
We hear one odd note often about online directories. Many production services providers list in other areas, then freelance local crew members. To put it another way, a production provider in Denver might list in a Chicago directory, then when you call and book them for a assignment in Chicago, they engage local film industry crew.
The people who you book as your camera crew might not be the one's who show up for your shoot. This can lead up to a misalignment between you, your expectations and the results you recieve.
Rest assured, if you speak with Acclaim Media and book a camera crew for a location in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin or elsewhere- it is our crew members on the shoot. We'll carry out your jobs EXACLTY as discussed.
Step 3: Craft Your Production Crew Wish List
Every video project has its own unique needs, your camera crew should be able to execute them. While the core team typically consists of a Director of Photography (DP), a camera operator, and perhaps a sound recordist. We also offer more complex lighting assistance through potential crew members like directors, gaffers, grips, directors, and production assistants.
Other film crew members can be added such as drone pilots. Lastly we can add makeup artists, caterers, teleprompter operators, set designers and have access to many other additional production services.
Create a checklist outlining the essential crew positions you require as a part of your production services. Prioritize each crew member based on your project's specific needs. For instance, a music video might necessitate a skilled Steadicam operator, while a corporate interview might benefit from a teleprompter technician.
(Not sure what you need? Feel free to call. We often help our clients figure out their crew and gear needs. By talking through the project we can ensure that we show up with the right crew and equipment for your video project.)
Step 4: Meet and Greet (Virtually or In-Person)
Once you've identified your top contenders for your job, schedule consultations to get to know them better. This is your chance to assess their communication skills, understand their creative vision, and gauge their enthusiasm for your assignment.
Don't be afraid to ask questions! Inquire about their experience with similar projects, their preferred equipment, and their approach to collaboration. Ask to see the production companies videography demo reel. Again, here's a link to our videography reel.
Remember, the ideal camera crew is not just technically proficient performers, but also a good fit for your personality and working style. A comfortable rapport is essential for a smooth and productive shoot.
Step 5: Negotiate and Sign the Deal
With your dream team in sight, it's time to discuss logistics and finalize the contract. Be transparent about your shooting schedule, location requirements, and any special effects or other equipment needs. A detailed budget breakdown is crucial to avoid misunderstandings and ensure everyone is on the same page financially.
Once everything is agreed upon, get it all in writing! A formal contract outlining the scope of work, payment terms, and cancellation policies protects both you and the video crew.
How much do camera crews cost?
Hard to pinpoint a specific price for a camera crew. The reason is we dont know what crew, video equipment (including camera gear, lighting and sound), locations and other requests are needed until we talk to you.
Your production needs will drive the price more than anything else.
What does a camera crew consist of?

Bonus Tips for Hiring Success
Check references: Don't hesitate to contact previous clients for their firsthand experience working with the the production crew. Even better if the production crew sends them to you in advance. (We love when clients check up on our business- we get glowing reviews.)
Review insurance: Ensure the crew has adequate insurance coverage for equipment and liability. We carry $1M in liability. We're shocked at the number of production companies who don't carry any. Seems silly to hire a camera crew without insurance.
Communicate openly: Maintain clear and consistent communication throughout the process and the shoot itself. Our crews want to make sure your job is done right!
Be flexible: Things can change on set. Be prepared to adapt and work collaboratively with your crew to overcome challenges.
Deliverables: Have your producer tell film crew members what format of video they want (resolution and frame rate). Any other special requests such as overcranking?
Deadlines: Both when the video shoot is supposed to happen and when you need the files. Don't forget to set deadlines for the final deliverables. This is often the footage FTP'ed, or a hard drive shipped to the client. Establish how you prefer the so it can be included in the budget. (Note that large camera files can take a while to FTP, this needs to be allocated for in your timeline.) Are they keeping a backup copy of the footage for you?
Show appreciation: A little gratitude goes a long way. Express your appreciation for the crew's hard work and dedication.
